The temperatures have dropped and the winds have picked up, winter has arrived and we find ourselves staying wanting to stay indoors curled up with a good book or binging the latest Netflix series. Keep reading for my interior design tips and tricks to create a warm and cozy home that will keep the winter blues at bay.
Tip #1 - Turn up the Heat
This might seem obvious, but all too often we don't heat our homes during the day, especially in Auckland where daytime temperatures are pretty mild, but a grey day can feel cold, damp and anything but relaxing.
If you have a wood fire, make the effort to light it. I know, its a pain to clean later but there is nothing quite like the flickering of flames and crackling of wood burning to make you feel good about staying indoors.
If you are not so lucky, make sure the heat pump is on, light some candles and plug in the fairy lights for an instant feeling of warmth.

Tip #2 - Add Cushions and Throws
Changing out cushions is an easy way to transitions between seasons. Choose warm colours and tactile textures for the colder months and don't forget to layer in a throw to make your sofa more inviting to curl up on.

Tip #3 - Layered Lighting
Layered lighting is a must to create atmosphere once the sun sets. Consider upgrading ceiling light switches to dimmers allowing you to control the amount of light required for the mood. Don't stop there though, ceiling lights alone appear flat even when dimmed. Adding accent lights in the form of floor and table lamps creates focus areas and pools of soft light for extra dimension.

Tip #4 - Floor Rugs
If you have hard flooring a large rug is essential, not only does is anchor and give focus to the living area in an open plan home but it provides a warm spot for your feet or bottom for those who like to sit on the floor!
The kitchen might be an unexpected place for a rug, but a runner can add warmth and softness underfoot, your feet will thank you for it. Unless you are very particular about spills you may not want an investment piece in the kitchen but there are plenty of easy care options on the market.

Tip #5 - Don't Forget the Bedroom
I find Auckland's mild winters don't call a winter duvet but I do like to add a comforter or coverlet as an extra layer to pull up on those extra cold nights. Nothing oozes coziness more than layering on throws, sheepskins and pillows to snuggle into.
